When Jesus invited His disciples to join Him for the Last Supper before His crucifixion, He invited them as they were. Perfection was not expected. “Take this bread, drink this juice; do this in remembrance of Me” was Jesus’ grace-filled invitation to take part in all that He offers, up to and including His life, which was sacrificed on their behalf—and ours—just hours later. When we participate in the Ordinance of Communion, we do so as unfinished works in progress, asking for the once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus to cover us, complete us, and restore us to Himself.
