“Back to Our Roots” Special Evangelistic Sabbath

“Back to Our Roots” Special Evangelistic Sabbath

This Sabbath, October 5, we invite you to join your Spencerville Church family for a special “Back to Our Roots” evangelism Sabbath.

What is “Back to our Roots?”

We’re glad you asked! It’s a special evangelistic initiative happening this Sabbath, October 5. We’ll meet in the Spencerville Adventist Academy auditorium for a short worship service at 10:00 a.m. before sending out teams of people at 10:45. These teams will go door-to-door offering to pray for our neighbors and leave behind a gift bag with a book (Steps to Christ), a Bible-study request card, and an invitation to worship with us at our new location at the Lutheran Church of St. Andrew. We’ll provide all of the materials, as well as a suggested script. After going door-to-door, we’ll return to the SAA auditorium at 12:15 p.m. for a brief time of testimonies and prayer.

FAQ

What is the goal of the “Back to our Roots” event?

Our goal is to pray for our neighbors and leave behind a gift bag with a book (Steps to Christ), a Bible-study request card, and an invitation to worship with us at our new location, the Lutheran Church of St. Andrew.

I’ve never done this before, what do I need to bring?

That’s okay, it’s easy! You only need to bring yourself (and your family, if applicable). We’ll provide all of the materials, instructions, and a suggested script.

What does the schedule look like for Sabbath? How long will we be out?

Here’s the tentative schedule for Sabbath, October 5:
9:00 a.m.  – Packing the gift bags in the Multi-Purpose Room at Spencerville Adventist Academy.
10:00 a.m. – Short worship together followed by directions/instructions.
10:45 a.m. – Dismissal of teams to canvass the neighborhoods.
10:45 a.m. – Dismissal of prayer teams to the prayer room.
12:15 p.m. – Return to SAA for a few minutes of testimonies and prayer.

How should I dress?

Please dress comfortably—and wear comfortable shoes! Suits and formal dresses are not necessary. Casual dress is disarming and friendly. We want to speak to them as neighbors because that’s what we are!

Do I need to be involved with every step to participate?

No. The event is structured so that people can be involved however they feel led. We understand that some may not physically be able to go door-to-door. Our goal was to involve as many people as possible.

What is the history behind this? What are our “roots?”

Great question! In 1940, a small group of Adventists from the Hyattsville Seventh-day Adventist Church began visiting and walking the dirt roads West of Burtonsville to share the good news of Jesus. There were no Seventh-day Adventist churches in the area. They hand-drew maps of the area (the image above is a scanned image of a map we have in our church archive) detailing their relationships, filling in the names and information of the people they met before inviting them to an evangelistic meeting. In like manner, we will do the same thing: knocking on doors to create relational connections, praying for any needs they share, and offering them a small gift that we hope will be a blessing.
